A rhetorical device is a way of using language to influence someone to take a certain attitude towards a subject without actually providing them with supporting reasons for taking that attitude. While we don't think it's always bad to use rhetorical devices in writing or speech, we certainly don't want to let our positions on important political issues be determined by them.
